Clean air is incredibly important to me because chronic lung disease runs in my family. I am 22-years-old and have lived in Boone County Kentucky for most of my life. My dad was diagnosed with COPD in his mid 40's and he is now 50. My dad is not a smoker, and his disease has developed due to a rare genetic disorder called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency that he and I both suffer from.
This deficiency leaves our lungs without the normal protection most people's bodies have against air pollutants and toxins. I attend a university where I am exposed to visible mold that covers a basement filled with asbestos. The air I breathe for long hours inside is of low quality and the air outside is not much better.
Clean air is so important to me, not just for myself, but for my dad. He has been living with asthma his whole life and now battles his chronic lung diseases daily. Healthy air is the first step in him being able to live a healthy life and for me to prevent developing the same lung disease that has devastated my family.
We all have a reason to fight for clean air. Click here to submit your own story.
